Silence = Death at New Museum and elsewhere (which is why Jenny Moore keeps it real and loud.)

Silence = Death at New Museum and elsewhere (which is why Jenny Moore keeps it real and loud.)

So yes it did take me 3 days to fully digest the great fun that was last weekend. What with the super moon and winning those Pick 5 scratch off tickets my excitement could hardly be contained. Add to the noise a boombastic Brooklyn Museum first Saturdays party with DJ Spooky on the decks and Keith Haring in the house (!) Woosh............ A girl could hardly get into Manhattan for the opening reception of Phyllida Barlow, Tacita Dean, Klara Liden, Nathalie Djurberg, Hans Berg and Ellen Altfest at the New Museum on Bowery. I hope at least 1 of the images captures the good old fashioned New York fun I had. Cheers!

It was crowded! so we shuffled into the elevator.

mmmm...pretty. Loads of fab hairdos. We all played it cool until this guy showed up:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Thank goodness this fancy color explosion saved us

The above photo evokes the parking lot mayhem had below during the dance party at Brooklyn Museum.  "Make some noise if you're with me."  RIP MCA

Is that the super moon stage right? Explains the shiny foreheads we shared. Strangers took pics of strangers. The love was shared. Keith drew a picture of it. Like to see it. Here it goes:

And if you aren't exactly feeling the love right now well you can always Lick Fat Boys.

Larry Bamburg and Friends rock Science on the Back End

Larry Bamburg and Friends rock Science on the Back End

O the joy of being friends with uber talented artists who live in NYC. I always feel blessed when getting to join in on that particular scene because the conversations are dense (and drunk), liberating (and raunchy) and stimulating (above and below the belt.)

Thanks to Matthew Day Jackson and Houser & Wirth for putting together a capital G(!) Good time. Please spend some time feasting on the gorgeous thought provoking works of my dear friend Larry Bamburg...

What can a lady say? Stunning.

Mr. Bamburg sculpturized this beauty using a little water and great skill. It is held together with ice. The "closet' you see is actually a custom built freezer that keeps 'ol bones intact. Go check it out! Houser & Wirth

MDJ and sons (Babushka style)

MDJ and sons (Babushka style)

Nothing makes me happier than worshipping the church of craft especially when the project becomes a gift.

This week had my creative brain doing pirouettes learning to decoupage an homage to my friend Matt and sons. Flynn fits into Everett fits into Matt. And so it goes. Laura and Punkin were the missing crucial players here which is fine for now as it only means I have some more Mod Podge in my future.

Anyway, here's how it all started. A simple enough idea that could have stayed just that if it weren't for these Russian nesting dolls found at the Brooklyn Flea.

In case you were wondering. Decoupage requires very little ingredients. Mod Podge glue, foam brush, something to stick on and something to stick to. In true SdC fashion I do this in a messy manner.

Two-thirds there. Wouldn't it be funny if I presented them as is? Would it trip Matt up and question his place in the world? Doubt that as he totally rocks and is solid like one :)

See top of post for finished product. O fams...

This Could Be Your Life

Aaaaah the dream of living as cozy wrapping 'round an ol' oak tree (or cherry blossom this time of year.) Sometimes a day in the life of a mid-town fashion designer means setting up presentation rooms, defending your chic aesthetic and shopping until your new sandals squeak. Thank hotness for one very handsome man who took this pic and shot a video - seasick viewers beware- in the lovely blooming neighborhood of Fort Greene. Thanks Tim!

In a silent but deadly tribute to Trayvon Martin, illustrator R.Kikuo Johnson has a series of black & white drawings in the April 9th issue of The New Yorker magazine. I took some quick iPhone shots for you to see.

J'adore Margiela

J'adore Margiela

Who can take an over-exposed theme like the butterfly and transform it into my most desired object of Spring? Monsieur Margiela and his team that's who. Dear heart skip a beat! Remove the humour and it is pure beauty. Keep it in and it's genius.

swept away

Remember that scene in American Beauty where hottie mc hottersons finds beauty in a plastic bag floating in the breeze? Well well well I experienced one such fleeting moment where I fell in love with the filth of New York and the violence of a windy day. Hope you enjoy the video I shot above.

Sarah Burton captured my heart in much the same way with her Fall 2012 collection for Alexander McQueen. A feathery flurry of fury. Go girl.

Olaf's In Carrol Gardens

Olaf's In Carrol Gardens

Hello fellas. If you live in NYC and have not been to Olaf's on 453 Court St. in BK I urge you to hop skip jump or metro your way over. I visited this men's only vintage shop last weekend and was impressed by the editing. Of course they have all the stuff any hipster guy wants (skinny mod ties, choice military jackets, classic brogues and more) but what I found particularly endearing were the selection of cuff links.

Believe it or not the above decorative - and might I add 1" tall - Bali Dancer head numbers above are CUFF LINKS! rad.  Tim and Chris liked the place too....

Wear Now

Wear Now

Is it just me or did Isabel Marant show Spring looks for her Fall 2012 runway show? Being the style maker that she is, I hope her bravery in bringing out vintage western-inspired cotton laces, micro ditzy silk prints and what for me seems o-so-obvious Spring looks down the runway will start an avalanche of other designers finally getting hip to a wear now mentality. Surely I cannot be the only lady who hates to shop Winter looks in Summer and vice versa.  I know a dozen or more fashion insiders who would gratefully welcome a more realistic approach to selling (and thus, buying.)

Let us buy what we can wear NOW. Thank You Isabel Marant for (hopefuly) being one of the firsts to start this trend.

one of my designs lands on the House of Dereon Spring 2012 collection

Working on the Miss Tina label has some perks. One of them being my relationship with Tina Knowles and her Beyond Productions staff. Dereon International has been a great success at Selfridges in London and for their second season I had the pleasure of seeing one of my designs make the grade. (Disclaimer: I am not the designer for Dereon. We are sister companies and sometimes have fashion powwows.)

I did it again

Folks, I truly cannot help it. The super stylish mystery garmento was in front of me walking up the subway stairs again and out came the iphone to shoot it all. Mild stalking never hurt anyone right? Besides, check out those pants! Whimsical conversation print of deer on a snow capped mountain? With coordinating bag of red dressed child in stripped birch woods. Ay ya ya.

Ungh! Do not feel ashamed to fast forward to 2:23 for the forever famous finale. Whitney Houston, growing up would have been a little less hopeful without you.

Miss Tina dress I designed on Key & Peele

Miss Tina dress I designed on Key & Peele

So as many of you know my day job consists of designing the Miss Tina label for major Wal-mart distribution. My night job is eating tasty food with the hubbs, plotting my dream retail space and getting extremely excited about starting jewelry class!

Anyway, check out this black & white printed dress I designed that was styled into a new Key & Peele episode on Comedy Central. Dope. o yeah and the skit is f-u-n-n-y.

Subway Sounds

You just have to Love New York. Have to. Have. To.

Where else can you be graced with the sounds of The Ebony Hillbillies? Sure takes the edge off the drudgery that is a subway commute. Thanks to Tim for the video.

Here's a little story that i like to tell

Here's a little story that i like to tell

A million years ago my friend Matthew Day Jackson gifted me his burly man plaid shirt. I knew what I wanted to re-design it as almost instantly. However, the transformation was not instant. Four score and ____ years later here it is.  A Victorian silhouette, button detail back, exposed zip front. Inverted box pleats create structured fullness (hell, there's even a hidden wire mesh bustle in the caboose ;)

Maybe it's the time that passed or my ever more feminine evolving style that keeps me from ever wanting to wear it. Tim says keep it for at least 3 weeks before donating to charity. A girl can wait 3 weeks.

pink grey and navy o my!

pink grey and navy o my!

Come Spring i hope to be rocking the above color palette in varied patterns and silhouettes. This vintage skirt was spotted in a San Francisco boutique. Although i did not pick it up, i did extract great inspiration from the candy pink, type-writer grey and almost black navy tones. Nothing says happiness like a color pick me up. xo
